The magic of the internet
With the magic of the internet it’s harder and harder to keep things from coming out before they’re supposed to. This also goes for music; in this case songs for Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus have already leaked onto the internet. I’m not going to link to the sings for the simple reason that they’ll probably be gone a couple of hours after they’re posted. Record companies don’t like their stuff leaking onto the internet so they try to plug the leaks. Though odds are that if you look for the songs on youtube you’ll have no problem finding them.
Lets start with the leaked Lindsay Lohan song; the song is called Bossy and apparently was written by Lindsay herself (the lyrics anyway) and rewritten by Ne-Yo (though none of this information is official seeing Motown never intended for this to come out, not officially anyway). The song itself is more of a dance song, the beat itself is somewhat catchy though not really my thing. My main problem with the song is the lyrics, I know that dance songs are usually a bit repetitive but in this case it’s just a bit annoying.
Lindsay isn’t exactly showing a lot of vocal range in the song, of course you can hear it was sung by Lindsay but it could have been recorded by anyone really. This song isn’t a challenging song for any singer and this is the main problem with Lindsay’s music career. She’s not really a musician; the singing is just a hobby, it’s not one of her core activities. The song itself doesn’t show any real passion for music. Of course this is just one song; the album could be great I don’t know I just doubt it. Doesn’t matter how many great producers she works with. If this is any indication of how her entire album is going to be it’s not going to do any better than the previous one which pretty much flopped (not due to me though, I actually own it).
Now to the Miley Cyrus songs; there are five songs for her new album already leaked. Three simply leaked onto the internet and she performed two more at the Disney Channel Games, with a lot of people having cameras these days there are of course videos of these performances. Lets start with the three leaked songs. Two of them were written by Miley herself (the lyrics of course and some of the music), they’re called Full Circle and Don’t Walk Away. Miley said that part of her album would be The Killers inspired, those two songs don’t really show that. They’re pretty much pop songs with rock influences, so they’re more rock than the songs on the Meet Miley Cyrus album.
I would call my own preference to music more rock oriented (and I absolutely love the Killers actually) so I would rank Miley’s own songs higher than Lindsay’s song but that’s just a personal preference. The main difference however with Miley is that you can clearly tell that she’s still learning and is actually involved in her music career. The fact that she writers pretty much all of her songs is a good clue in that but she clearly expanded her vocal range compared to her previous album. Something you could also tell between the first and second Hannah Montana soundtrack. The songs just simply show more passion for music. Though I actually have my reservations about Full Circle and Don’t Walk Away, the lyrics and singing is good but the music doesn’t stand out quite enough to really make an impact.
There was another song leaked though which is a cover; Four Walls was originally written and performed by country singer Cheyenne Kimball. This is actually song where Miley’s voice development really stands out, I would actually say that Miley sings the song better than Cheyenna. Miley’s voice just seems more suited for the song which makes it stand out more.
Now to the two last songs which she performed at the Disney Channel Games. The songs are Breakout (which is also rumoured to be the album title and probably the first single) and Fly on the Wall (I’m not sure on the writing credits on those two songs but apparently those are by Miley as well). Both songs just seem like fun rock songs, even more rock oriented than Full Circle and Don’t Walk Away. It’s hard to make a real judgement on the song due to the lousy quality of the recordings.
However going into this more rocky direction is a very risky move for Miley, the Hannah Montana crowd seems to have taken to the pop songs of the show. This is actually what impresses me most about Miley right now, she just does her own thing. She’s probable fully aware of the fact that if she’d made another pop album high sales figures are guaranteed.
Miley however wants to find her own sound and is going into a more rocky direction, she’ll just have to wait and see if her fans will go for it. Quite impressive that she’s doing this at this young an age. It’s also possible that she’ll attract a different crowd with this kind of music so it can turn out both positive and negative as far as sales go. We’ll see what happens on the 22nd of July and the weeks after.
With these leaked songs I can only come to one conclusion though; Miley is ten times the musician Lindsay is as far as talent and passion goes.
