Edition 25: Sex Symbol at 14

I remember when Britney Spears released her first video that people were saying how inappropriate she was dressing in that video. Girls started wearing stomach revealing tops and schools banned them (they did at my high school anyway). I first have to point out that I’m everything but a prude. I’m just starting to think that the level of what’s being regarded as acceptable for teens to wear is going down; the girls in Hollywood are a good example of that trend.

When Britney did her Baby One More Time video there was of course less exposure of celebrities. They were only seen in the music videos themselves and other TV shows they were featured in. These days with the internet they’re in the spotlight almost every single second so we see far more pictures of them at Hollywood events compared to the past. I still get the impression that the girls in Hollywood are trying to show off as much as possible these days. The worrying part about this however is more about the age of these girls. What wasn’t acceptable for sixteen year olds ten years ago seems to be becoming acceptable to thirteen and fourteen year olds.

There are girls out there that try look sexy when they shouldn’t really be bothered by stuff like that yet. Of course fashion is a big thing these days but what’s the point in showing off cleavage if a girl doesn’t even have cleavage yet? All this results in is getting attention from people that shouldn’t be interested. I’m a member on quite a few forums; a couple also fall under the babes category. Not that I’m a shallow guy but I’m still human and they can just be a good source for images. People just post pics on there not knowing how old these girls are anymore.

I remember that about two years ago on one forum (I’m not going to name the forum in question) closed threads on Jamie Lynn Spears and JoJo because they were considered to young to be posted about. People posted those pictures because they didn’t really know them that well and didn’t realise that those girls were thirteen or fourteen. It’s a known fact that history keeps repeating itself, even on forums. These days topics about people like Miley Cyrus get closed because they’re too young. The topics usually get reopened once the girls reach the more acceptable age of sixteen.

If someone like Jojo chooses to dress a bit more revealing now that she’s sixteen that’s fine with me. The fact that she already did this when she was younger, some of the outfits in her Leave(Get Out) video wouldn’t have been allowed in my high school, far from it. She was thirteen when she shot that video.

The thing is that these girls probably know that this kind of thing happens when they put on clothes that can be considered questionable. They also live with their parents who also don’t seem to have a problem with this, I know that girls that age can be very stubborn and like to get what they want but there should be a limit. I’s not even incidental in some cases, someone like Miley Cyrus seems to be wearing a shorter skirt or a more revealing top every time she goes to a public event. At the Teen Choice Awards she even had a near nip slip miss, when she walked on stage she had to pull up her dress. Of course I don’t know whether anything would have shown but that would have been quite a headline for the tabloids.

Even girls that usually dress quite normally for their age show up in rather revealing dresses these days. It really seems to be becoming more and more normal to dress like that. Someone like Sofia Vassilieva who I’ve never seen dress provocative in any way before suddenly shows up in a rather revealing black dress. If you look at her showing up at other events her wardrobe is more age appropriate though.

If this is the development celebrity wardrobe takes over a period of ten years; it makes me wonder how the thirteen year olds will be dressing ten years from now. It might be nothing compared to what we’re seeing now; it also might be the polar opposite. I’m everything but a fashion expert so I can’t predict how kids will be dressing ten years from now. I also don’t really care about what they’re wearing, the main concern I just have with this kind of provocative clothing is that they get attention from the wrong kind of people.
