Actors and models are under pressure to stay slim, and smoking is one way to help do that (cocaine, etc., is another way, but you can do a whole separate topic on that!). As far as denying it- smoking (at least in the US) has a growing stigma attached to it, which is being reinforced by the extremely strict anti-smoking laws that are now appearing everywhere (California, New York, Chicago, Arizona, etc., etc.- again, another argument!). It just isn't "cool" to smoke anymore, at least in public, and it is becoming associated more and more with the "lower socioeconomic classes." It is very simple- nicotine is an appetite suppressant.
