Edition 15: Be Yourself
What’s wrong with a natural look? These days in Hollywood it just seems like everyone is changing something about them. I’m not talking about plastic surgery here even though some people do that. But we’re focussing on the younger generation here who haven’t quite gotten to that point yet; still they try and change themselves.
Of course Hollywood has always been a case of a lot of make-up. But when I recently saw an image of Amanda Bynes with bleached hair and heavy make-up I just thought why? I always had a weak spot for Amanda; she just had a cute look. What’s wrong with that? The Hollywood diva look just doesn’t suit her. I liked the way she looked before a lot more, I hope this is just a phase for her. Hairspray will come out this week and in that it makes sense that she has more extreme hair and make-up, but she shouldn’t take it out of the movie and put it in her own life.

Amanda isn’t the only one though. We don’t even know what some people’s natural look is, take Hilary Duff. From the very beginning she was in showbiz she was a bleach blonde. These days she isn’t anymore of course but the thing with dying with hair is that it’s not gone the next day so her current look isn’t natural as well. It might be close but it’s not her natural hair colour. I guess every actress has to go through a blonde stage for some reason though; most of them seem to be blonde at some point in their career.
And there’s another thing with wearing a lot of make-up, just take a look at the older generation in Hollywood; ever seen them without make-up? Not always a pretty sight; it’s a proven fact that make-up will harm the skin. They can develop all sorts of things that will reduce the damage caused but skin is just meant to breathe. Not to mention what kind of damage all that colouring could do to their hair. But even for that they have a solution; hair extensions. You see a Hollywood star with short hair one day and the next day they have hair as far down as their butt.
This also leaves me with the question what do they actually look like? Is it really just all a façade? I’m not saying they shouldn’t use make-up or extensions at all, but at least stay true to yourself and don’t try to change who you are. In a lot of cases a natural cute look is a lot better than a Hollywood diva look.
The category of starlets that still belong in the under-age group seem to use less make-up in their normal life but they are dying their hair. I’ve seen examples of starlets that dye their hair just one shade darker? What’s the point? It doesn’t make a difference whether you have normal brown hair or dark brown hair. The only case in which I would understand it for girls that young is if it were for a movie role. But it usually isn’t, not as far as I can tell anyway.
I don’t think I’m the only one who feels like this; people might be shallow but a lot of people still prefer natural beauty. Being themselves will also give a positive signal to their fans; don’t try to change who you are.

One of the reasons to try to change who you are, is that you are not happy with yourself. I could write a Freud-tinged book here, but suffice it to say I can’t help but think that one of the signs that Lohan would be actually coming to grips with herself is when she goes back to being a (rare and unique!!) natural redhead. Blond is so cheap and ordinary these days, why not just leave that look to Pamela Anderson? And tell me Jessica Alba, with her beautiful olive complexion, looks okay as a blonde? I agree, it is certainly fine if you need to change your appearance for a role, but natural beauty is the way to go.
