The Third Drops to Third in its Third Week

Monday, November 10th, 2008

We were gone for a couple of days for various reasons; not that there was a lot of news to report anyway.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year didn’t make it to number one at the box office a third week in a row. It dropped to third behind Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Role Models. It still made about $9.2 million giving it a worldwide total of $168.6 million so far. Considering the thing only cost $11 million to make that’s quite a big return for Disney.

I keep saying it but the more money the movie makes the bigger the chance that there will be a fourth installment of High School Musical.

High School Musical 3 stays on top

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

High School Musical 3: Senior Year managed to stay on top of the Box Office the past weekend. It managed to make $15 million over the course of the weekend, which is obviously less than last week but still enough to stay on top. The total is at $61.8 million for now in the US but already well over $100 million worldwide. So the movie is basically already a success.

Looking at those numbers I would say it’s not a question of if there will be a High School Musical 4 (though Disney already made that intention clear) but more about when. The question just will be whether people like Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale will be in it.

HSM Tops The Box Office

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

This was to be somewhat expected but it always has to happen before it can be confirmed. High School Musical: Senior Year topped the box office charts this weekend. The movie made approximately $42 million at the US box office and $40 million at the international box office. The main competition was Saw V with a box office result of $30.5 million in the US, though competition is probably the wrong term. Most people that went to see High School Musical 3 probably weren’t allowed in the Saw V theaters.

It actually did better than I expected; a move from TV to big screen is always a risky one. Looking at that result (and assuming it won’t drop off too much the next couple of weeks) I don’t think it’s a question whether there will be a fourth one. They’ll probably also try and get the old cast back as well though their salaries would have to go up considerably. I ‘m also not quite sure how a new story with the same cast would work though but that’s for Disney to figure out.

True musical fans probably won’t be too happy about it though.

If I counted correctly that’s 57 awards, a bit much if you ask me. Some categories seem a bit redundant. Can’t say that I can argue with the results the list is too long for that really, though they were decided by online vote and people were allowed to vote every day. At least it was Fox who decided on the nominees and not like MTV did also have an online vote for the VMA’s which resulted in probably the worst nominees list for any award show I’ve ever seen.

I might get back to the TCA’s once I’ve seen the show but for now people will have to do with the results.

Forbes top earners

Friday, July 25th, 2008

So I picked up Forbes magazine today because I knew they were having something about the top earning people in entertainment. These lists really aren’t a surprise anymore; they added a top earning tweens list. Result (obviously) is that Miley Cyrus is on top of that list with an income of $25 million (together with Daniel Radcliffe but it’s well known we limit ourselves to the female side here).

She’s followed by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen with $15 million, Ashley Tisdale with $5.5 million, Emma Watson with $5.5 million, Hilary Duff with $5 million and Vanessa Hudgens with $3.2 million. On a side note (well not that much of a side note) Keira Knightley made the top earning actresses list with $32 million.

More than I’ve ever made in my life but I’m actually surprised there’s that much of a difference between them, I knew Miley was the biggest young star out there I just didn’t realize the financial gap was that big. She managed to earn more money in a year at fifteen that most people will earn in their entire lives (though all of the ones listed have made more than most people do in a lifetime).

At the end of the issue they also added a thing I didn’t really get: Good Girls, Bad Girls; Who makes more, the squeaky clean or the jailbird queen? On the good side they have Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff and Lauren Conrad. While on the bad side they have Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. Seems a bit pointless to me really, in the end the good side wins of course.

I keep wondering where Forbes gets these numbers from though, it’s not like they can ring up the celebrity accountants and ask for the numbers. So they’re probably very well researched estimates.
