Mandy Moore expands onto the internet

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

So far Mandy Moore has done singing, acting and designing but now she has added something new to her schedule. She’s started the website www.uPumpItUp.com, which is a sort of social networking site for women.

The statement on the site itself says:

You know that boost of energy you get when you accomplish something, share a great moment with someone, or just try something a little different? Helping you feel that good every day is what uPumpItUp is all about.

This is a place where women inspire each other to do more of the things that make us feel great, and help share that good feeling with others!

Feel daring or calmly introspective? Wildly creative or playfully social? There’s a type of community challenge for every mood you’re in, and tons of possibilities to explore with friends - both old and new. And each challenge has realistic milestones - so you make actual progress and enjoy more of those “Yeah, I did it!” moments.

Still seems a little vague to me, so it’s a website meant to inspire women; nothing wrong with that. If this is a thing that will work I don’t know of course, it might, it might not. Thing just is that there already are a lot of other social networking sites so does this fill a void in the market? That’s something you can never predict, despite the site already having sponsorship.

From a technical view there’s still a lot that needs to be done on the website, clicking on several links gets you error messages and what section does what isn’t that clear. So for the site to become a successful social networking site I think it still needs some work.

Who makes the most money?

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Forbes Magazine released its “The 20 Top-Earning Young Superstars” this week, which basically focuses on the stars under 25 and look at how much they make. The top earners are pro-athletes so they’re of no real interest to us. In our field of interest the list pretty much starts at number five with the Olsen Twins earning $17 million each, though they didn’t actually make any money of their career in movies but of their production and clothing company.

Hilary Duff is ranked 7th with an income of $12 million, Keira Knightley is 10th with $9 million, Scarlett Johansson is 12th with $5 million, Mischa Barton is 13th with $4.5 million, Dakota Fanning is 14th with $4 million, Emma Watson is 15th with $4 million, Miley Cyrus is 17th with $3.5 million, Lindsay Lohan is 18th with $3.5 million and Mandy Moore is 19th with $3.5 million.

I just wonder, how does Forbes know what they make? I am in no position to claim that they’re wrong but income is just something that people don’t really like to talk about. Endorsement deals are also something companies tend to be vague about.

Especially looking at the example of Miley Cyrus I think she actually make considerably more than $3.5 million. In her case I just think it’s hard to keep track of everything she makes money on, seeing she makes a cut of all Hannah Montana merchandise and there’s a lot of that stuff out there. I also think she makes a fair some of money of her fan site mileyworld.com, despite the negative press. They do mention her concert tour but it seems like they’re pushing that back to next year. Which is probably explained by the timing, if they don’t count November until next year then the number is probably quite realistic. For next year the number should go up quite a bit.

Lindsay Lohan proves that even with going to rehab twice, getting DUI’s and pretty much just messing up you can still make $3.5 million a year. Though that number might have been considerably higher if she had been in successful movies.

I would really like to know where they get their numbers though.

Edition 17: The Bad Habit

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Mischa Barton, Thora Birch, Kaley Cuoco, Elisha Cuthbert, Kirsten Dunst, Scarlett Johansson, Keira Knightley, Lindsay Lohan, Jena Malone, Mandy Moore, Hayden Panettiere, Natalie Portman, Brittany Snow and Michelle Trachtenberg. Those are the names linked on starletlinks.com that are proven to be smokers. This means that of the names linked on the site in the age category over 16, 35% smokes. This is higher than the average in the normal population, the normal number for women in the United States is 22%.

Some things I have to say before going further into this is that these are the people that are proven to smoke. There might be others that do a very good job of hiding it. And of course I also don’t know how much these people smoke, they could be social smokers. But one thing is certain, they do smoke. Personally I think it’s a horrible habit; though I have personal reasons for that. But I don’t think any less of people that do smoke.

But why is the percentage of smokers so high in Hollywood? And why do they start so young? I think there are multiple reasons, I remember an interview with Shannon Doherty, she’s way past the starlet age but it does show a point. She once had to smoke in a role; she liked it so she kept doing it. I don’t know how often this happens but it shows it does happen.

At first she denied it but these days she can be spotted holding a cigarette quite frequently.

Edition 9: Big Cars; Small Girls

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

Lindsay Lohan once again crashed a car as we all know and we already went into that, now we’re going to talk about the cars. She crashed this specific car, a Mercedes SL65, multiple times. It made me think, why do people like Lindsay and her colleagues in both age range and occupation drive cars that are way too big and fast for them?

Lindsay has had multiple cars in her not that long driving career. She pretty much started off with a Mercedes SL55 but traded that in when the SL65 came out. The only real difference between those two cars is the engine; the SL65 has more power and is a bit faster to 60mph. The top speed is the same, German car makers (except for Porsche and Audi on their top of the range sport models) all limit their cars to 155mph. So why even bother getting a SL65 instead of a SL55?

It’s just a car that’s easier to crash because the electronics can handle the power of the engine in the SL55 but they can’t in the SL65. And I’ve seen pictures of Lindsay getting into that car on flip-flops, that’s asking for trouble. And the car is available with a V6, if you tell your local Mercedes dealer to make it look like an AMG they will. So there really isn’t a need to drive a car like the SL65. But she already has a new car besides that SL65; it’s a Porsche Carrera convertible. At least that’s a car that manages to get its power onto the road. Unless Lindsay finds out there’s a tuner in Germany that will modify it to 900bhp and 250mph.
