Edition 34: Falling Starlets 2007

Friday, December 7th, 2007

As promised last week here’s the list of falling starlets of 2007. So mainly the people that have been going down on the Hollywood ladder. I’m fairly certain that there will be more people that disagree witht his one than with the Rising Starlets 2007 list from last week. The premise is the same in this case though, these views are only based on one opinion and that’s mine. I could of course be completely wrong and some of them might have dozens of secret projects lined up. But looking at the current situation the list comes out as this:

Edition 25: Sex Symbol at 14

Friday, September 28th, 2007

I remember when Britney Spears released her first video that people were saying how inappropriate she was dressing in that video. Girls started wearing stomach revealing tops and schools banned them (they did at my high school anyway). I first have to point out that I’m everything but a prude. I’m just starting to think that the level of what’s being regarded as acceptable for teens to wear is going down; the girls in Hollywood are a good example of that trend.

When Britney did her Baby One More Time video there was of course less exposure of celebrities. They were only seen in the music videos themselves and other TV shows they were featured in. These days with the internet they’re in the spotlight almost every single second so we see far more pictures of them at Hollywood events compared to the past. I still get the impression that the girls in Hollywood are trying to show off as much as possible these days. The worrying part about this however is more about the age of these girls. What wasn’t acceptable for sixteen year olds ten years ago seems to be becoming acceptable to thirteen and fourteen year olds.

There are girls out there that try look sexy when they shouldn’t really be bothered by stuff like that yet. Of course fashion is a big thing these days but what’s the point in showing off cleavage if a girl doesn’t even have cleavage yet? All this results in is getting attention from people that shouldn’t be interested. I’m a member on quite a few forums; a couple also fall under the babes category. Not that I’m a shallow guy but I’m still human and they can just be a good source for images. People just post pics on there not knowing how old these girls are anymore.

Another Weird List

Friday, September 28th, 2007

US Magazine has put out another one of those quite weird lists, this time the 2007 Hot Hollywood Power Players. I’ve questioned the use of rankings before but in this one I really wonder what their ranking criteria are.

jamie1.jpg

Focussing on the younger women on the list we can see Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens, Amanda Bynes and Jamie Lynn Spears. They also included the Cast of Heroes (which makes the list even stranger) which also includes Hayden Panettiere. The Heroes show will lose a lot of support this year I think, the show seems to be overhyped a bit right now. So not that Hot Hollywood at the end of this year I think.

I can understand why they put Miley Cyrus and Vanessa Hudgens on the list; they’re having a good run with the younger crowd right now. Amanda Bynes is on there because of the success of Hairspray and because she is completely scandal free which the press likes these days.

Why put Jamie Lynn Spears on the list? Her sister isn’t exactly helping with her problems; she herself even had a pregnancy scare. The only thing she has going right now is her TV show Zoey 101, besides that she isn’t really doing anything. Compared to other shows on TV the show isn’t doing that great, if you compare it to her competition on that list she loses by a mile to Miley Cyrus. I really wouldn’t rate her as a power player.

I’m just starting to think they put this list together so they could invite these people to a party. If you put them on a list like that you’ll have a bigger chance of them coming than just inviting them. I can’t see any concrete criteria to how these girls were ranked in that list.

Edition 7: Meat Rankings

Friday, May 25th, 2007

Recently the Maxim Hot 100 came out; I’m starting to wonder how many of those hottest women lists actually exist. And if you ask me they’re looking at the wrong criteria; I usually just call them meat rankings.

The people at Maxim claim they look at the complete package, looks, public exposure and the career to come. Starting with the number one Lindsay Lohan; don’t get me wrong, I like her. But should she be number one on that list right now? I don’t think so, her career isn’t at an all time high right now and it doesn’t look like she has a big blockbuster coming anytime soon. She is a favourite with the paparazzi; apparently the public exposure is enough for Maxim to rank her first.

But these women want to be on the list. Attention is important in this business; though they always try to be recognised for their talent and not for their looks. But with dozens of these rankings out there it’s not that easy, the entertainment magazines usually pay more attention to a hotness ranking than to a good movie review.

The consequence of this quest for attention is that some of these celebrities dress above their age. They want to be on the hotness lists radar even though they aren’t eligible yet. A magazine won’t post a hotness list with underage girls on them. I can pretty much assure you that Hayden Panettiere will be on the 2008 hot list, she’s the internet’s guilty pleasure at the moment. Though in her case it’s not that bad, she’s seventeen she can dress like that.

Edition 3: Is a name all that matters?

Friday, April 27th, 2007

How often do you hear that the new generation of celebrities has to thank their career to a family member; a dad, mom or sibling that got them their job? Is it really that simple to start a career in Hollywood? Why would a hack without any talent be able to start a successful career?

If you check industry websites quite regularly you encounter a lot of articles about Hannah Montana, currently the biggest show on the Disney Channel. Most of these articles introduce Miley Cyrus, the star of the show, as the daughter of country-singer Billy Ray Cyrus (the Achey, Breaky Heart guy). Of course you can’t get around this fact but there are also articles that suggest she got started in the business because of her father, that his name helped her. Even though the producers knew who they were casting I don’t think it mattered to them that Miley’s dad is famous, he still had to audition for the part of her father.

Hannah Montana is the top rated cable show in the tween market; show me one tween that watches the show because of Billy Ray Cyrus or that even really knew who he was before the show? I doubt you’ll find any. Not to mention that the soundtrack for Hannah Montana featuring eight songs by Miley easily outsold her father’s album that was released the same year. If anything; it’s Billy Ray Cyrus that’s benefiting from a new younger audience. If it weren’t for his part on his daughter’s show he probably wouldn’t be in the public eye as much right now. To the viewers of the show Miley isn’t Billy-Ray’s daughter, but he’s Miley’s father.
