MTV Has Lost it

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

The people at MTV have officially lost their minds. They clearly have no idea what they are doing. This isn’t really starlet involved but I still need to get it of my chest. We already saw what kind of disaster the VMA’s were when Tokio Hotel won the best new act award and basically stealing it from the other nominees. MTV has learned nothing and we’re going to see the same thing at the EMA’s (European Music Awards).

My problem is the system in general but just to highlight we’ll take the worst category in there. MTV in their wisdom has decided to create a Best Act Ever category, so basically saying who the best performer in history is. So who do you think they nominated? Madonna, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones? Of course not, the nominated acts are Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day, U2, Rick Astley and bloody Tokio Hotel.

The only act I can live with in that list is U2, they’re legendary even though I’m not a big fan. Britney, Christina and Green Day simply aren’t at that stage yet. Rick Astley is an internet joke these days and nothing more which sucks for him but is just reality, I’m guessing a youtube campaign is to thank for their nomination.

Then there is the case Tokio Hotel. I have nothing against these guys as mentioned before but they’re just a fake act. Created by some marketing guy in Germany, in reality these guys are probably nothing like the image they portray. Fact is that they’re only popular in Germany and less success in other European countries. So it’s even a stretch that they’re nominated in any category but best act ever? I suspect an epidemic of RSI amongst German teenage girls fairly soon.

You just don’t do nominations for an award show through online voting; it’s just asking for nonsense nominations. Especially not if you have an army of insane teenage girls supporting them. MTV should be stepping in when they see voting results like that, they have the right to intervene. It’s not about who clicks the most but who’s actually the most popular. Not with MTV though, after you vote you actually get a message which clearly shows that they don’t actually care if the best one wins:

THANKS FOR VOTIN! VOTE AGAIN TO MAKE SURE YOUR FAVOURITE WINS.

MTV has been criticized for ignoring music these days; half their shows is reality junk. Their award shows used to be popular, fun and even mean something. Now they just turned into an enormous joke and have no actual meaning. They turned the MTV Awards into a meaningless paperweight. Things like this will just make more and more people lose respect for MTV, if they don’t do anything about it I can only see them going downhill.

Oh yes, as icing on the cake the brilliant minds also hired Perez Hilton to be their online host, the actual show will be hosted by Russell Brand just like the VMA’s. Why hire Perez? I have no idea. Half the people there probably don’t even want to talk to him, I know I wouldn’t.

If you want to do something starlet related go online and vote for Miley Cyrus in the Best New Act category. Maybe justice will be served and she’ll actually win that seeing she was robbed at the VMA’s even though the award doesn’t actually mean anything. If she does I sure hope that she stands up MTV and doesn’t go to Liverpool to attend the show.

TRL is canceled

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

MTV has canceled Total Request Live or TRL for short. The last episode will be a two hour special in November. Though it’s said not to be gone forever but that it’s taking a break. Somewhat I doubt that, once a show is gone it rarely returns.

So why even bring it up here? Well, mainly because pretty much everyone featured on this site has been on it at some point: Ashley Tisdale, Miley Cyrus, Michelle Trachtenberg, Hilary Duff, you just name them.

You have to wonder what MTV will replace it with; they’d better replace it with a show about music. I don’t think MTV can afford to lose even more music from their programming; if they did they might as well remove the M.

Voluminous Anonymous Awards ‘08; Boredom. Music. Boredom.

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Seriously, I never thought something once remarkable such as the Video Music Awards could become so blatantly weak. Starting up from the beginning, the red carpet was nothing too special but like always it got you tuned waiting for something big on the VMA’s itself. The disappointment started with the guy who was doing the red carpet interviews when he was saying “oh, my God, Britney’s doing the opening scene!! Is she going to sing? Is she going to dance? What is she going to do?!” (all that coming like the faith of the earth depends on what Britney does).

Then Britney comes on stage and makes a very short, very plain brief announcement about VMA celebrating their 25th anniversary. No kissing another female? No Jannet-style nip slips or anything else shocking? How can they actually include the word “mayhem” in the VMA ads? I’ve seen bigger “mayhem” in the Disney channel games! She could’ve at least let Jonah Hill from Superbad kiss her, so the VMAs could get at least a little close to being shocking. When later Russel Brand announced that neither Britney or Mariah Carey have ever won on the VMA got me thinking that it’s time for a consolidation - and yes, Britney got it (along with two more Moonmen). While the number of awards she has won is debatable; we may have to accept the decision as only fair, seeing she’s been for so long in the music industry without getting anything from the VMA’s.

Speaking of Russel Brand, before the show I was hoping that his potty mouth and witty jokes might mean we’re in for a great entertainment, but it wasn’t to be. Him mocking the Jonas Brothers and the political talk was something I was far from impressed about. I don’t think he was given as much creative freedom as did Sarah Silverman’s hosting of the 2007 Movie Awards; seeing how limited his performance was. In fact, I think that it was Sarah Silverman’s anchoring of the 2007 awards that made the MTV so cautious about having people like her and Brand on the show. If they didn’t want to let him say whatever he wants, why get him as a host anyway? Sarah Silverman is mayhem, a censored Russel Brand is not.

Something I really got hyped about was Miley presenting an award and eventually winning one. First came the disappointment with her presenting - the announcer said something about Bon Jovi’s “Living On A Prayer” and that got me excited that she might actually sing it. Like the rest of the announcements, it was just an innuendo - Miley was backstage playing “Rockstar” and singing to that song. As every other appearance by celebs, it wasn’t anything special except for the fact they made her look like an already spoiled star. What followed, though, was a trully amazing Pink who made a great performance and also showed everyone how hot she still is.

The biggest disappointment was the Best New Artist award. The possible nominees were - Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Jordin Sparks and Tokio Hotel. Anyone amongst the first four would’ve been a great choice, all have shown amazing progress in the last year. But Tokio Hotel? The manager-told-them-to-be-emo band is only new to the US where they had a late forced entry onto the market this year. Their highlight was a 39th spot on the billboard 200, not exactly the stuff dreams are made of. In comparison Miley Cyrus scored three number one albums within two years and she doesn’t win. It’s ridiculous that an award like Best New Artist goes to a band like Tokio Hotel. It seems that the emo kids have way more time on their hands than the legions of Miley fans. Thumbs up for Miley’s fans, because this shows that they actually have a life outside the Internet - I’m proud of you!

The TCA nominees are in

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Fox announced the nominees for the Teen Choice Awards, we already knew Miley Cyrus is hosting it. The people that are usually featured on this site that were nominated were: Abigail Breslin, Ellen Page, Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson, Hayden Panettiere, Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens, Jessica Biel, Taylor Momsen and Britney Snow (yes, no one seems to have mentioned to them her first name is Brittany). But honestly the nominees aren’t why I’m posting this.

So why bring it up? One line on the voting site is bugging me; Remember. You can vote every day. This makes this entire award void for me, it’s just a matter of people voting as often as possible. The bulk of people will probably vote just once but certain groups will just flood the voting. I know it’s hard to regulate an online vote like this but somehow encouraging people to vote as often as possible just seems wrong. I don’t know why either, with text message voting as many votes as possible also means as much income as possible. This is an online vote so they don’t actually generate income from every vote submitted.

I’m probably the only person bugged by this, it’s an award show for teens after all. So I should just let them be and have their awards even though they don’t really matter. In the end what award outside of the big ones does matter?
