Showbiz Kids Top 25

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Last month Hollywood Reporter put out a list called Showbiz Kids Top 25, it’s a bit slow regarding news right now so lets take a look at the list. Hollywood Reporter is a serious publication so there is some merit to their opinions. Hollywood Reporter pretty much made a list of people active in Hollywood seventeen and under who they think have the biggest chance of making it big in Hollywood in the long run. The focus of this site is the female generation in Hollywood so I’m just going to highlight those in the list.

1. Miley Cyrus
2. Abigail Breslin
3. Dakota Fanning
4. Emma Watson
5. Emma Roberts

6. Cole and Dylan Sprouse
7. Freddie Highmore
8. Kristen Stewart
9. The Jonas Brothers
10. AnnaSophia Robb
11. Josh Hutcherson
12. Madison Pettis
13. Noah Gray-Cabey
14. Mark Indelicato
15. Angus T. Jones
16. Josh Flitter
17. Kyle Massey
18. Miranda Cosgrove
19. Jamie Lynn Spears

20. Spencer Breslin
21. Keke Palmer
22. Alex Etel
23. Nat and Alex Wolff
24. Selena Gomez
25. Liam Aiken

In general there aren’t any real shockers in that list though I didn’t know some of the names. I can’t know everyone in Hollywood after all, it shows that the list was made before all of the Jamie Lynn pregnancy stuff, I doubt they would have put her on the list if it had be known before that. The top five is pretty much a shoe in on the list so there’s just not a lot I can say about this list, Hollywood Reporter did their homework. Not that I doubted them in that regard, they serve as a valuable news source to this site.

Who makes the most money?

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Forbes Magazine released its “The 20 Top-Earning Young Superstars” this week, which basically focuses on the stars under 25 and look at how much they make. The top earners are pro-athletes so they’re of no real interest to us. In our field of interest the list pretty much starts at number five with the Olsen Twins earning $17 million each, though they didn’t actually make any money of their career in movies but of their production and clothing company.

Hilary Duff is ranked 7th with an income of $12 million, Keira Knightley is 10th with $9 million, Scarlett Johansson is 12th with $5 million, Mischa Barton is 13th with $4.5 million, Dakota Fanning is 14th with $4 million, Emma Watson is 15th with $4 million, Miley Cyrus is 17th with $3.5 million, Lindsay Lohan is 18th with $3.5 million and Mandy Moore is 19th with $3.5 million.

I just wonder, how does Forbes know what they make? I am in no position to claim that they’re wrong but income is just something that people don’t really like to talk about. Endorsement deals are also something companies tend to be vague about.

Especially looking at the example of Miley Cyrus I think she actually make considerably more than $3.5 million. In her case I just think it’s hard to keep track of everything she makes money on, seeing she makes a cut of all Hannah Montana merchandise and there’s a lot of that stuff out there. I also think she makes a fair some of money of her fan site mileyworld.com, despite the negative press. They do mention her concert tour but it seems like they’re pushing that back to next year. Which is probably explained by the timing, if they don’t count November until next year then the number is probably quite realistic. For next year the number should go up quite a bit.

Lindsay Lohan proves that even with going to rehab twice, getting DUI’s and pretty much just messing up you can still make $3.5 million a year. Though that number might have been considerably higher if she had been in successful movies.

I would really like to know where they get their numbers though.

Edition 33: Rising Starlets 2007

Friday, November 30th, 2007

There are dozens of pointless lists on the internet during a year, most of which show up at the end the year. If you ask me I would say most of them are useless, in the end people will make their own judgement on who they think is best. So that’s why starletviews is introducing “the rising Starlets of 2007”, a list that shows who of the younger generation is climbing the Hollywood ladder. It’s extremely subjective because it was made by just one person: me. No public voting was involved to manipulate the results in any way.

Emma Watson is a princess

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Emma Watson has signed on to lend her voice to the character of Princess Pea in the animated movie The Tale of Despereaux from Universal Pictures. The story is about three unlikely heroes, a misfit mouse who reads books, an unhappy rat who schemes to escape the dungeon and a bumbling servant girl. Their fates are connected to that of the castle’s princess. It will be the first animated feature by the special effects company that did the special effects for the Chronicles of Narnia and the Golden Compass.

From a graphic standpoint it will probably be good but with animated features it’s always the question whether they can get to the same level of story as Pixar. For Emma this seems to be a side project but at least it’s something else than Harry Potter. It’s probably best to start making a name for herself without being in the centre of the spotlight.

Edition 23: The Star Trek Effect

Friday, September 14th, 2007

What on earth does Star Trek have to do with the new generation in Hollywood? No you haven’t missed any new star climbing amongst the ranks of Star Trek; there isn’t even a show on right now. The Star Trek effect is just an expression for actors and actresses that get their name fused with a certain role. If you mention names like William Shatner, Leanord Nimoy, James Doohan or George Takei most people don’t know who you’re talking about. Yet if you mention Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Scotty or Sulu they will know.

This doesn’t just happen to people on Star Trek; usually actors are used that aren’t too well known up to that point. Once they got on the Star Trek shows and the shows became popular (though in the case of the original Star Trek it was after the show ended, but the same is true for the newer shows) they weren’t known as themselves but as their characters.

There are plenty of teen actresses that have to deal with the same problem; they never get rid of a certain role in a way. People will always see them for their breakout part and not for the rest of their career and sometimes this really hurts their careers. The best example from the past in my mind doesn’t actually come from Hollywood but from Austria. Maybe not everyone is familiar with the Sissi movies but they’re about a Bavarian princess that marries her cousin to become empress of Austria, the story is based on historical figures.
