Edition 60; The Secret Life Sidetracked

secret-life-american-teenagerWhen The Secret Life of the American Teenager premiered on ABC Family last July it was somewhat of a surprise; teen pregnancy seems a bit outside of the comfort zone for a channel owned by Disney. So here was this show where a normal teenager got pregnant by making one single mistake, the main character Amy (played by Shailene Woodley) can hardly be considered the loose type. They have other characters on the show to take care of it, one of which is the father of the baby (Ricky).

So here was a chance for ABC Family to shine light on a problem which everyone knows exists but no one really seems to want to confront. Sure there are shows where the premise contains teen pregnancy (good example being Gilmore Girls) but it never actually shows the daily dealings as far as the issue is concerned. At first The Secret Life of the American Teenager actually seemed to be doing that; portraying a somewhat realistic view of the subject.

There were story lines in the first part of the show which didn’t quite make sense or were very realistic (certain aspects around Ben becoming her boyfriend mainly) but the main storyline seemed to be intact. Amy finding out about the pregnancy and having to deal with the fact. There were other characters on the show obviously, characters she is involved with and the factor of a boyfriend was also added. The other characters served as support cast to the central storyline, then it all changed.

Edition 59: Oscar, Good or Bad?

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

What is an Oscar or Academy Award really? It’s the highest possible award in the movie world. For most people it’s a crown on their work, once you’ve won and Oscar you’re pretty much at the peak of your career. What if you win the Oscar at a young age or even get nominated at a very young age?

We’ve seen quite a few young actresses be nominated in recent years, if we just look at the last two years we have Abigail Breslin for her supporting role in Little Miss Sunshine, Saoirse Ronan for her supporting role in Atonement and Ellen Page for her starring role in Juno. We will however not really look at them seeing they didn’t actually win and because they were nominated not that long ago. So what it will do to their career in the long run isn’t really known yet.

So lets take a look at a young actress who won an Oscar not that long ago. Anna Paquin won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her part in The Piano in 1994, she was only eleven years old making her the second youngest winner ever behind Tatum O’Neal. So what happened for Anna Paquin after the Piano?

Edition 57: Where’s Ali?

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

It’s been a while now since Living Lohan aired on TV; during it’s short run (it was only a nine episode season, whether it will be back is unknown) it got quite some attention in the media though a lot of it was mockery. I also mocked the reality show about the life of Dina Lohan and her kids; though mainly about the reality part seeing there was none, the show was a bit too clearly scripted. The main purpose of the show however was to launch Ali Lohan’s career. So how did that go? (more…)

Edition 56: Keyword Fun

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these so it’s just that time again; what kind of strange things are people looking for on the internet? How search engines work is quite simple, it looks for certain keywords within a page and it will display those as search results when someone searches for those keywords in a search engine. There are a lot of search engines but for this purpose we’re only going to look at the results from google that brought people to this page. Simply because it’s the biggest and we’re only focusing on the period of July, August and October so we can look at changes.
