Not Too Promising

So the first episode of Sonny With a Chance aired and what do we think of it? Not feeling it so far would be the best way to describe it. The first fears have already been partially proven; the sketches performed on the show So Random within the show Sonny With a Chance aren’t even close to being funny. Doesn’t mean that’s enough reason to disqualify the entire show, for a final verdict more episodes have to be aired, this is just a first impression.
The show starts of with a bit of a missed chance; we see Sonny how she prepares to leave for Hollywood. They explain why she was picked (because she had a funny webshow) to be on So Random but we never see the moments that lead up to it. It might be that Disney was afraid to enter iCarly’s turf a bit much if they had done it but it would have added something to the general premise of the show. As they started it; Sonny doesn’t really start of as the not famous girl who has to get used to the fame. She’s in Hollywood from the start.
There are still a lot of open questions to be answered in later episodes; will there be anything outside of the TV studio or Sonny’s home? Disney is rather known for limiting the number of sets they shoot on so it wouldn’t be very surprising but it would be a pity. Especially seeing they’re doing a TV show within the show, they could basically use the entire Walt Disney Studios complex to shoot the show. Which hopefully they will do to some extent.
The main problem seems to be the cast so far though; especially Tiffany Thornton just seems not funny at all (who’s a mystery a little bit, there is not even a source which says when she was born). The entire cast seems rather random actually with Allisyn Ashley Arm playing a rather odd character who likes to spend her spare time in a sarcophagus and air canals. That’s just a comedic factor which seems far too forced which makes it not funny at all. The rest of the cast isn’t really noteworthy so far; they’re just there.
As for Demi Lovato the main star; she is known to smile a lot but in same cases on Sonny With a Chance it just seems extremely forced. The whole cast just doesn’t interact naturally. Of course it’s a show mainly aimed at kids and teens but right now there is just something missing on screen. Hopefully that will get better in later episodes.
