Not Too Promising

sonny-with-a-chanceSo the first episode of Sonny With a Chance aired and what do we think of it? Not feeling it so far would be the best way to describe it. The first fears have already been partially proven; the sketches performed on the show So Random within the show Sonny With a Chance aren’t even close to being funny. Doesn’t mean that’s enough reason to disqualify the entire show, for a final verdict more episodes have to be aired, this is just a first impression.

The show starts of with a bit of a missed chance; we see Sonny how she prepares to leave for Hollywood. They explain why she was picked (because she had a funny webshow) to be on So Random but we never see the moments that lead up to it. It might be that Disney was afraid to enter iCarly’s turf a bit much if they had done it but it would have added something to the general premise of the show. As they started it; Sonny doesn’t really start of as the not famous girl who has to get used to the fame. She’s in Hollywood from the start.

There are still a lot of open questions to be answered in later episodes; will there be anything outside of the TV studio or Sonny’s home? Disney is rather known for limiting the number of sets they shoot on so it wouldn’t be very surprising but it would be a pity. Especially seeing they’re doing a TV show within the show, they could basically use the entire Walt Disney Studios complex to shoot the show. Which hopefully they will do to some extent.

The main problem seems to be the cast so far though; especially Tiffany Thornton just seems not funny at all (who’s a mystery a little bit, there is not even a source which says when she was born). The entire cast seems rather random actually with Allisyn Ashley Arm playing a rather odd character who likes to spend her spare time in a sarcophagus and air canals. That’s just a comedic factor which seems far too forced which makes it not funny at all. The rest of the cast isn’t really noteworthy so far; they’re just there.

As for Demi Lovato the main star; she is known to smile a lot but in same cases on Sonny With a Chance it just seems extremely forced. The whole cast just doesn’t interact naturally. Of course it’s a show mainly aimed at kids and teens but right now there is just something missing on screen. Hopefully that will get better in later episodes.

Sonny With a Chance

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Disney Channel has starting promoting Sonny With a Chance a while ago but as the moment comes closer they’re of course stepping it up a bit. They’ve now also released a promo video which contains the theme song to the show.

Demi Lovato – Sonny with a Chance Theme Song

To remind people of the premise; it’s about a teenage girl named Sonny (Demi Lovato in this case) who gets the chance to star on her favorite show on TV, a sketch comedy show like Nickelodeon’s All That (though it has been off the air for a couple of years now). Sonny has to get used to working on the show and the fame that comes with it.

To be bluntly honest; the promos so far look outright cheesy. The problem with kids sketch shows is that they’re already somewhat cheesy, they’re a very simple kind of humor and there is nothing wrong with that. A sitcom however is usually an exaggerated version of a real life situation, so this is an exaggerated version of an already cheesy concept making it even more cheesy. Possibly even too cheesy.

The theme song to the show seems somewhat boring, though it’s only a clip. Until it premieres on February 8th I’m keeping an open mind but in all honesty the show doesn’t look very promising. It could actually turn into a flop if all the signs are right, for Demi’s sake I surely hope it’s not a flop.

Kids’ Inaugural

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Next week is all about the inauguration of Barack Obama as president of the United States. With that comes a ton of so called inaugural balls which includes one specifically aimed at children. The Kids’ inaugural honors military families and takes place on Monday night and will air on the Disney Channel.

Now to why we post it here, it will feature both Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato. Billy Ray Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers and Bow Wow are performing for some reason. The event will be hosted by the first and second ladies to be, Michelle Obama and Jill Biden.

Demi Lovato: La La Land Music Video

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

So Demi Lovato has a new music video; this time for her song La La Land from her Don’t Forget album. On the Disney Channel it’s also being used for promotion of her new show Sonny With a Chance which will start to air in 2009.

The concept of the video is quite simple; it’s Demi walking through La La Land pointing out that she’s still a normal girl. That she won’t be influenced by Hollywood to change into something she is not.

Thing is that it isn’t true. She points out that she wears Converse on a red carpet but in reality she wears heels, just like everyone else. She also admitted that she toned down her music to appeal to a larger audience, which would suggest that she change because of the “La La Land Machine”. I also fail to see how often it happens that Demi actually makes the front page of a gossip magazine. It’s still only a music video though so it shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

The song La La Land isn’t exactly the strongest one on her album so I’m not sure why they picked one. What I also don’t understand in the video is that Demi did sing the song in a studio at some point but in the video she just moves her mouth. Of course a music video is never recorded live, it’s always playback but you never really get the idea she’s actually singing there. She’s just moving her lips nothing more.

Hollywood Records should really start to focus more on music videos; all the videos they’ve releases lately look like they were just thrown together. Of course it’s expensive to shoot a music video but a good music video can get you noticed.

Edition 56: Keyword Fun

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these so it’s just that time again; what kind of strange things are people looking for on the internet? How search engines work is quite simple, it looks for certain keywords within a page and it will display those as search results when someone searches for those keywords in a search engine. There are a lot of search engines but for this purpose we’re only going to look at the results from google that brought people to this page. Simply because it’s the biggest and we’re only focusing on the period of July, August and October so we can look at changes.
