Edition 59: Oscar, Good or Bad?

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

What is an Oscar or Academy Award really? It’s the highest possible award in the movie world. For most people it’s a crown on their work, once you’ve won and Oscar you’re pretty much at the peak of your career. What if you win the Oscar at a young age or even get nominated at a very young age?

We’ve seen quite a few young actresses be nominated in recent years, if we just look at the last two years we have Abigail Breslin for her supporting role in Little Miss Sunshine, Saoirse Ronan for her supporting role in Atonement and Ellen Page for her starring role in Juno. We will however not really look at them seeing they didn’t actually win and because they were nominated not that long ago. So what it will do to their career in the long run isn’t really known yet.

So lets take a look at a young actress who won an Oscar not that long ago. Anna Paquin won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her part in The Piano in 1994, she was only eleven years old making her the second youngest winner ever behind Tatum O’Neal. So what happened for Anna Paquin after the Piano?

Are they bald or not?

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

The last couple of days pictures from the set of My Sister’s Keeper have been showing up; that’s the movie starring Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin and Sofia Vassilieva. The question now is; did Cameron and Sofia shave their head? The reason for them being bald is that the character of Sofia is suffering from cancer and her mother Diaz shaving her head out to support her daughter. Abigail doesn’t need a bald head for the movie.

Cameron Diaz and Sofia Vassilieva bald

On the question of Cameron it’s a no, she didn’t. It has confirmed that she’s wearing a bald cap. The fact that there aren’t any fake lines showing doesn’t mean anything seeing the level make up is at these days. As for Sofia, I do not know for certain but I cannot imagine that Sofia actually shaved off her blonde locks. I think that it’s a bald cap as well, it would be easier to prove if there were candid pictures of Sofia not on set but there aren’t. The paparazzi aren’t interested in her though that’s probably a good thing. I just think it’s a bald cap because her head looks just a little bit too big, impressive what they can do with make up really.

The having to shave her head was supposed to be the reason why Dakota Fanning backed out of the movie; taking little sister Elle with her. So I don’t think it was the shaving, so it was either because Dakota didn’t want to look like that on screen or there were simply other issues. We just don’t know.

I just have to point out that the bald look isn’t a good one for either Sofia or Cameron.

Edition 46: Official websites; one year later

Friday, April 11th, 2008

About a year ago I wrote about how pitiful a lot of the official websites for the people linked on starletlinks.com are. So I took a look at the sites a year later and also looked at other ones; there is good news and bad news.

Lets start with the bad examples of last year, it’s always best to start with the bad news. LLrocks.com, Lindsay Lohan’s official site still hasn’t received a single update. A last update on the 27th February 2005 was bad enough last year now it’s even worse, I can’t even imagine how little they care about her web presence. Yes of course she has more important things to take care off, she has to try and rebuild her career but a good web presence could be a sign to people that she really is serious about it. Though the Lohan family doesn’t take the internet serious anyway, they’re trying to launch Aliana Lohan’s career but her site is probably even worse than Lindsay’s, no information there whatsoever.

Another site that hasn’t received a single update in the past year is Abigail Breslin’s site. Just like last year it still mentions that she’s nominated for an Academy Award, this time last year we already know she didn’t win it. Looking at the website of Sofia Vassilieva who’s now Abigails co-star in My Sister’s Keeper it’s even worse. Not a single update in about seven years on a website for a girl that’s just fifteen. So her site hasn’t been updated for pretty much half her life, not the mention the very old school internet background music on the site. They don’t have to be active on the internet themselves, that might cause more trouble than it’s worth. But they should remember that they have a fanbase that does go online, they care and don’t like things like this. A good web presence shows that a celebrity cares about their fans, of course it doesn’t mean that Sofa and Abigail don’t but it’s not that big an effort.

Fannings out, Breslin and Vassilieva in

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Dakota and Elle Fanning won’t be starring in the My Sister’s Keeper after all; after Dakota was asked if she would consider shaving off her hair she and her sister withdrew from the movie right away. Their parts are now set to be played by Sofia Vassilieva and Abigail Breslin, Sofia of course playing the older and Abigail playing the younger sister who sues for emancipation.

The sole reason why she was created was to be a genetic match for her sick older sister. Cameron Diaz plays their mother and Alec Baldwin will play the lawyer representing the little girl. John Cusack will also be part of the cast. The movie still sounds good with a cast that’s getting rather impressive, even though it doesn’t seem to be the normal big studio (New Line) kind of movie.

As I understand it, it really wasn’t a demand that Dakota would shave of her hair but it was still enough for both Fanning sisters to pull out of the movie. Of course I don’t know the details but it seems to me that it’s something that can be talked about. It seems a bit harsh to pull out of a movie just because of a request. I doubt Vassilieva would be very willing to have her head shaved but we’ll have to see about that.

Would be a pity to see all of Sofia’s hair go but it would show that she’s prepared to go the extra mile for a movie. To be perfectly honest, I see the replacement as an improvement to the cast. Not that the Fanning sisters are bad I just have higher regard for the acting talents of Breslin and Vassilieva. Though I still have to see if they work as sisters, for the Fannings it wouldn’t have been hard to play sisters convincingly. The shooting schedule is set to stay as it was.

Showbiz Kids Top 25

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Last month Hollywood Reporter put out a list called Showbiz Kids Top 25, it’s a bit slow regarding news right now so lets take a look at the list. Hollywood Reporter is a serious publication so there is some merit to their opinions. Hollywood Reporter pretty much made a list of people active in Hollywood seventeen and under who they think have the biggest chance of making it big in Hollywood in the long run. The focus of this site is the female generation in Hollywood so I’m just going to highlight those in the list.

1. Miley Cyrus
2. Abigail Breslin
3. Dakota Fanning
4. Emma Watson
5. Emma Roberts

6. Cole and Dylan Sprouse
7. Freddie Highmore
8. Kristen Stewart
9. The Jonas Brothers
10. AnnaSophia Robb
11. Josh Hutcherson
12. Madison Pettis
13. Noah Gray-Cabey
14. Mark Indelicato
15. Angus T. Jones
16. Josh Flitter
17. Kyle Massey
18. Miranda Cosgrove
19. Jamie Lynn Spears

20. Spencer Breslin
21. Keke Palmer
22. Alex Etel
23. Nat and Alex Wolff
24. Selena Gomez
25. Liam Aiken

In general there aren’t any real shockers in that list though I didn’t know some of the names. I can’t know everyone in Hollywood after all, it shows that the list was made before all of the Jamie Lynn pregnancy stuff, I doubt they would have put her on the list if it had be known before that. The top five is pretty much a shoe in on the list so there’s just not a lot I can say about this list, Hollywood Reporter did their homework. Not that I doubted them in that regard, they serve as a valuable news source to this site.
